October 22, 2014—Generation Squeeze

The Senate Liberal Caucus once again opened our doors and continued to learn, discuss and debate issues of national importance. This effort is hosted by the Senate Liberal Caucus but is intended to be non-partisan.

On Wednesday, October 22nd 2014 from 9:30-11:30 am we had our second in a series of meetings looking at the job market in Canada. We will hold a discussion on the employment prospects of young people in Canada, or what some scholars call “Generation Squeeze” or “Generation Flux”. With high youth unemployment, stagnant wages, crushing debt and rising cost of living the under 40 generation is feeling the impact.  We would like to learn about what the federal government can do to help.

Speakers Include:

  • Paul Kershaw, University of British Columbia
  • Business Development Bank of Canada
    • Michel Bergeron, BDC Senior Vice President, Marketing and Public Affairs
    • Julia Deans, Futurpreneur Chief Executive Officer
  • James Knowles, Conference Board of Canada
  • Leilani Farha, Canada without Poverty

Wednesday October 22nd, 2014
9:30 am – 11:30 am
Room 160S, Centre Block

Senator Art Eggleton, Co-Chair, Open Caucus
Senator Claudette Tardif, Co-Chair, Open Caucus

*Please note that due to the tragic events of October 22nd on Parliament Hill, we were unable to hold this discussion. We intend to discuss this topic again through the Open Caucus in the New Year.
