November 5, 2014—The New Canadian Veteran

The Senate Liberal Caucus once again opened our doors and continued to learn, discuss and debate issues of national importance. This effort is hosted by the Senate Liberal Caucus but is intended to be non-partisan.

Afghanistan was Canada’s longest military engagement to date. As a result, thousands of young men and women have returned with the physical and emotional scars caused by war. This has led to a host of issues. Some veterans are having difficulty transitioning back to civilian life. It was recently reported by the Veteran’s Ombudsman that nearly half of our most severely injured or ill veterans are not receiving the care they require. Moreover, the country was shaken by the recent news that the number of suicides in our veteran community has surpassed that of those who gave their lives in combat during our mission in Afghanistan.

We are opening our doors to individuals of all political views to join stakeholders in a discussion on what needs to be done, what policies are making a difference and what policies are in need of a change. The most informed voices will be those working with veterans, and the veterans themselves. Only they can enlighten us on a veteran’s specific needs, what they are experiencing as they return to civilian life and the steps that are needed to assist them.

Speakers Included:

  • E. (Joe) Sharpe, BGen (Retired)
  • Mike Schaub, (Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research)
  • David MacDonald (Wounded Warriors)
  • Guy Parent (Veteran’s Ombudsman)
  • Gary Walbourne, (National Defence and Canadian Forces Ombudsman)
