Statement made on 10 March 2010 by Senator Jim Munson

Hon. Jim Munson:

Honourable senators, my question is for the Leader of the Government in the Senate. Canada's interim Information Commissioner recently announced that she will be launching an investigation into political interference with access to information requests in the Department of Public Works and two other departments. Canadians were promised accountability and transparency by this government and are, frankly, outraged that individuals and media must wait five to six months to have an information request answered when the standard waiting time is 30 days or less. [...]

Can the Leader of the Government in the Senate assure us that the interim Information Commissioner will have the necessary and prompt support she will need from government to conduct this investigation?

Tributes to Senate Staff

12 Jul, 2010 | By Senator James Cowan | Honourable senators, before we adjourn, there is one additional item of business which I think we should address, and that is the thanks to the many people here who make our work possible.

Jobs and Economic Growth Bill – Sixth Report of National Finance Committee Negatived

12 Jul, 2010 | By Senator Roméo Dallaire | Honourable senators, it is late and I will attempt to be brief. I have only five years of experience here, so I still feel I am in my apprenticeship or at least ebbing my apprenticeship phase in this institution. I cannot go back, as some of our colleagues, to the 17th or 18th century to use references, but I can go further back than CNN history, which is just last week, and go to the Cold War era. I wish to discuss Part 15 of Bill C-9, which deals with the sale of AECL.

Jobs and Economic Growth Bill – Sixth Report of National Finance Committee Negatived

12 Jul, 2010 | By Senator Grant Mitchell | Honourable senators, I, too, am happy to have the chance to participate in this debate. I echo what has been said about the excellent work done at committee by Senator Day and Senator Gerstein. I have had a number of experiences like this while I have been in the Senate where something special needed to be done, where there was a sense of purpose about an important issue and people came together and worked very effectively at a very high level.

Jobs and Economic Growth Bill – Sixth Report of National Finance Committee Negatived

12 Jul, 2010 | By Senator George Baker | Honourable senators, with regard to Senator Moore's speech, I attended that portion of the meeting of the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance and I was shocked to hear the testimony from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Jobs and Economic Growth Bill – Sixth Report of National Finance Committee Negatived

12 Jul, 2010 | By Senator Mobina Jaffer | Honourable senators, I rise today to speak on Bill C-9. I want to thank Senator Day, Senator Gerstein, Senator Murray and all the members of the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance for the work they have done. I want to thank them for their dedication and for their work on our behalf.
